Actually the 64KB limit sounds like the older PST file limit (Outlook 97-2002)
with the Large Table support enabled. Without the Large Table support enabled
the limit was 16K maximum items and maximum folders. Outlook 2003/2007 PST
files don't have that low of a limit.

References for the older file types:

Not sure what the current Outlook 2003/2007 PST (Unicode format) limits on
items are. I do know the theoretical file size limit maximum of 33TB (yes
terabytes) with a limit set for 20GB in the registry.

I have a junk e-mail folder on my home Outlook install for my POP3 e-mail that
is currently sitting at 100727 items. Yes yes I know too much, but it works
fine. I guess I'll find the limit out for us eventually. But since the PST
file can be that much bigger, the item limit is probably up there too.

Can you explain a little more about the following (is this documented
somewhere?):

"I know that we have issues with outlook 2003 and PST's at about the 65K
range as they use a 16 bit word as a counter/pointer so you'll cap out at
65535".

Well I have several top level folders with 45000+ in them (e2k3). Yes
performance sucks but it works, we only resort to it for folders that you go
into once a month or so.

I know that we have issues with outlook 2003 and PST's at about the 65K
range as they use a 16 bit word as a counter/pointer so you'll cap out at
65535.

I have 29,000 emails in my Sent Items. Why? Because I can. Is it slow?
Sure, but it still works just fine.

Not that I don't believe you from empirical evidence, but I would appreciate
any link to Microsoft's info on this. We have had numerous discussions with
people here at the office and it always comes down to "show me the money".

I have looked for quite a while, and I am sure I am not using the proper
search terms, but this link would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
