Cache mode uses OSTs, not PSTs.

You mean that you've got users with mailboxes in PSTs?

There's lots of things to be done about that. First, go back and read
Master Ed's signature, and put all those PSTs on the server where they
belong.

If that's not feasible, you can upgrade to OL03/07 and the new PSTs, which
can be larger.

Show your users how to make additional folders and break up the big ones.
If they won't do it, change the name of their outlook.pst when they're not
looking, and when they open a new, nearly empty Inbox, they'll be very
motivated to learn how to get their stuff back on your terms. Or lynch
you -- either way your problem will be solved :)

Yipes. We are moving to MessageOne. It uses cache mode. I've got lots of
users over 2 GB. Don't know what to do.

That actually sounds like a PST size limit problem instead. If its an ANSI
97-2002 PST check the file size. If its over 1.2GB I suggest creating a new
one. Those old PST files can start having problems around 1.5GB from my
experiences. If it hits 2GB you can LOSE complete access to the file and
have to run a recovery tool against it. If its not near that size limit
there may be some other corruption involved and you can either run scanpst
against it or create a new one.

For my user that had 6,800 emails in her inbox, plus a dozen folder under
her inbox; appointments addressed to her stopped propagating her calendar.
Could the number of emails in her inbox have caused that? When we got her in
box down to 2,000 emails, appointments started working.

I would drag and drop the folder contents because I think it's safer than

No automated conversion built into Outlook. Just File -> Import and Export
into a new PST. You shouldn't have to export and re-import the rules once
you switch over to the new PST file, but you may have to "modify" a couple
to make sure it moves any e-mail to the correct folder if they move messages
to a folder in the PST.

You can double check the Format of the PST files looking at File -> Data
File Management and checking the Settings on the PST. If its old it will
say "Personal Folders File (97-2002)" in the Format field. Otherwise it
will just say "Personal Folders File".

My comments were in referance to using PST files for my home mail (not
exchange) but after reading more it seems that my PST is not using the new
unicode as it was a migration from outlook 2000 about two years ago.
Anybody know if there is a automatic converter around (making copies of all
the folders and exporting and re-importing all the rules will get ugly)?

At work we are e2k3 and outlook 2003. I know that people have older PST
files that they have moved with years of archived e-mails (all the way back
to early 90's).

So being able to upgrade those to exceed the earlier limits would be great.

Our current mail retention policy does not allow for keeping more then 18
months of history online.

The newer Outlooks are supposed to automatically modify the (97-2002) ANSI
PST files to use Large Table support after hitting a certain limit.

If you can install an old copy of Outlook 97-2000, you can take a look there
to see if large table support is enabled and if not enable it.

Otherwise I suggest using Outlook 2003 PST file if you have to use PST files
anywhere. Yes, they only work for Outlook 2003+, but not having to waste
time to recover a 2GB PST is worth it.

This is embarassing: 10 years with Exchange, and I've never heard of Large
Table Support. Worse, I can't find it anywhere. Nikki's directions got me
nowhere. I drilled through all the menus and the Help -- nothing. I googled,
and the only substantial stuff on LTS was for Outlook 97.

Can anybody extend a helping hand to the hapless?

This is PST/OST info: Server info is dependent on OST with Cache mode etc.
as it applies to the client.

ANSI: File Size: 2GB max (reads about 1.92GB in Explorer)

Large Table Support not Enabled (Default)
* 16,000 folders
* 16,000 items per folder

Large Table Support Enabled
* 65,000 folders
* 65,000 items per folder

To enable Large Table support, right click on Personal Folders and select
properties. Select Advanced. Check the box to enable large table support
and select OK until you return to the main window.

ANSI: Legacy PST (Outlook 97 - 2002)
* 2GB max file size
* 16,000/65,000 items per folder
* 16,000/65,000 folders per folder
Unicode: PST (Outlook 2003 Only/Not backward compatible)

* 20GB max file size (default limit but can go higher - NOTE: limited by
drive format; FAT16 is limited to 2 GB for a single file, FAT32 is limited
to 4GB for a single file)
* Be very careful how you sell the new file size limit. You must keep in
mind that FAT32 has a single file size limit of 4GB - 2 Bytes. So if you are

running Windows 2000/XP on a FAT32 partition, the unicode PST can't grow
beyond the single file size limit of FAT32 no matter what Outlook 2003 can
do.
* Unknown items per folder (rumor has it at 130 million)
* Unknown folders per folder (more than any mere mortal deserves)
* Unicode format will support all known character formats

Requirements for Unicode format PST:

* Users must have Exchange 2000 or later accounts
* Outlook also checks the formats - Unicode or ANSI - of users Offline Store

(OST) files and the default archive files.
* Outlook checks the format of users' PST files that are used as a delivery
location (if any).

Can you explain a little more about the following (is this documented
somewhere?):

"I know that we have issues with outlook 2003 and PST's at about the 65K
range as they use a 16 bit word as a counter/pointer so you'll cap out at
65535".

Well I have several top level folders with 45000+ in them (e2k3). Yes
performance sucks but it works, we only resort to it for folders that you go
into once a month or so.

Not that I don't believe you from empirical evidence, but I would appreciate
any link to Microsoft's info on this. We have had numerous discussions with
people here at the office and it always comes down to "show me the money".

I have looked for quite a while, and I am sure I am not using the proper
search terms, but this link would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

The limit is just over 16,000, in any one folder, I believe, however
it's a generally accepted guideline that you should keep it under
1,000 items in any folder because Outlook will take an increasingly
long time to render the view of the folder as the number increases.
Simply create some other folders and sort messages into them if they
can't be deleted.

Is there a limit on number of emails in Outlook Inbox?

A user had 6800 emails in the Inbox. I told user to get it to under
1000 or some Outlook functions might fail.

Does Microsoft provide guidelines on this?

Orin
