If this is SMTPo protocol logging, you aren't logging enough. Go into the
properties and increase the logging (check all of the boxes) and try again.
This log does not show Exchange's response to the MAIL FROM command. However,
looking at it, I can see no reason Exchange would reject the MAIL FROM since it
couldn't/wouldn't know if it was a relay attempt until the RCPT TO command,
which is missing from this log snippet. Further, the from address in the
snippet you've provided is different than the from address in the NDR you
posted previously. So I think there's more research required here...

Thanks, Dean. We changed it and the new FROM is [EMAIL PROTECTED] but email is
still not relaying. I turned logging on and found this:

2008-01-28 00:13:01 192.168.100.240 mmc-mail.mmc.mmcwm.com EHLO
+mmc-mail.mmc.mmcwm.com - -
2008-01-28 00:13:01 192.168.100.240 mmc-mail.mmc.mmcwm.com MAIL +FROM:+<[EMAIL
PROTECTED]> - -
2008-01-28 00:13:01 192.168.100.240 mmc-mail.mmc.mmcwm.com QUIT
mmc-mail.mmc.mmcwm.com - -

And, to make things interesting, I got from the EMC assigned to the case:

"Problem
ConnectEMC email home messages are refused by a number of SMTP servers
Symptom
ConnectEMC email home messages may be refused by SMTP servers
due to lines longer than 1000 characters (RCF2822). The long lines are
caused by incompatible new lines (LF instead of CRLF) in
messages sent by ConnectEMC.
Fix Summary
Change SMTP server configuration to accept email with lines
longer than 1000 characters"

I've never seen anything like the above and I have no idea how to change that
(if that truly is the case).

I assume:

the device is internal to your network?
the [EMAIL PROTECTED] is the actual from address from the device?

If so I suspect that exchange is saying "this email is from emc.com but
is trying to be relayed off my subnet which is mmcwm.com, so no"

If you can reconfigure the emc to say it is from [EMAIL PROTECTED]
then the relay may work.

If you can't reconfig, try BLATing emails from the device in question
with the different from addresses to see if what I am suggesting is
true.

I have always used the from address coming from any internal device to
be the seme as the domain name exchange uses. i.e. exchange domain
address nrc.govt.nz so any internal email is
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I also setup a catch all mailbox in exchange to catch any replies. i.e.
the admin mailbox

primary is
admin at nrc.govt.nz

additional are
kiosk at nrc.govt.nz
ipmonitor at nrc.govt.nz

users have a tendency to reply to automated addresses....

I consider it poor mail admin to create email addresses for domains that
you are not authoritative over i.e. emc.com

Cheers
Dean

Subject: unable to relay

Exchange 2000
I have a device (EMC Centera) that is trying to send out health reports
and alert messages. I have verified that the device's IP address is in
the allow to relay list but mail is not being relayed and the device's
log shows the following:

[2008-01-18 11:19:20] Failed to send email, result:Unacceptable response
to RCPT TO: 550 5.7.1 Unable to relay for <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I seem to be running into this probleme lately. I have another device
that is having the same problem.

Any ideas, please?
