When I've seen sendmail used as a perimeter relay, it is used in conjunction with a generated alias table so mail to invalid recipients is blocked before being relayed to Exchange. Edge promises to automate that process completely, in that the hub transport server automatically synchronizes the directory with the edge transport server once you've configured it.
I've also seen it used to readdress mail, for example, changing outbound addressing from something like [EMAIL PROTECTED] to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You'll want to evaluate whether Edge can be made to do these kinds of things, depending on what things you need done.
