Had a quick look around, but I can't find the article. Have you renamed the
srvmax or srvmin (whichever one you are using) to setup.exe and then run it
yet. You should then get a warning about this version of Exchange has
'issues' with Win2k. Carry on going and it installs as good as gold.

The error you get is when you do not rename the file, as Windows doesn't
trap the potential conflict. All that is happening is the setup program is
looking for the fixes (which do not exist any more on win2k). The *only* way
around is to do the copy to hard disk and rename the file.

This will fix the problem - it did it for me at least. If I find the
article, I'll let you know.

Correct. Svrmax is Enterprise. Svrmin isn't. Still can't find the Q you

I assume the CD you are using is Select. What you need to do is copy all of
the files from CD to the local drive and rename the setup file to setup.exe
(rather than srvmax or whatever it is). There is a Q article on it
somewhere.

What installation process did you use to get OWA 5.5 running on IIS5? The
way I have done this is to install a fully functional configuration on NT4
and then upgrade to W2K but this seems very longwinded. Couldn't find
anything relevant on Technet or WWW. Is there an easier method?

Ok.  We are having the exact same problem and I've been trying to figure it
out, too.  We have a very similar setup.  OWA5.5 SP4 running on W2K SP2 and
separate Exchange 5.5 SP4 servers running also on W2K SP2.  So, it's not a
W2K to NT4.0 issue.   Here's what we've discovered so far:

1. We have noticed that this ALWAYS happens after network outages/hiccups.
For example, if the switch that is connected to the backbone where the
Exchange Servers run is rebooted, all OWA servers start exhibiting this
behavior.  
2. IIS and ASP engine still work when this problem happens.  I wrote some
test ASPs and put them in the same vroot and they function just fine.
3. Restarting the WWW service clears the error.
4. The problem started happening only after we deployed OWA5.5 on W2K.
Never an issue with OWA5.5 on NT4.0.
5. The "cannot connect to Exchange Server xxxxxxx" error is for the initial
connection of OWA (the server name you provide when you run OWA setup), not
necessarily the server that hosts the mailbox.  
6. Found the following Q articles on this topic, but haven't had a chance to
go through them yet: Q176240, Q247085, Q178511.  I doubt it's the last one
since that would cause a permanent problem, not an intermittent one.
7. While the problem is happening, name resolution works fine both ways
between the OWA and Exchange servers.

Yes, if clients can't connect to owa, because the owa server Failed to
connect to the mailserver, we are able to ping the server.
We also can browse the default website, IIS keeps on running. The problem
occurs when owa tries to open a mailbox.

Before owa tries to open a mailbox, the user must be validated by a PDC or
BDC. The same credentials are used to open a mailbox.
When the owa server can't connect ot the mailserver, the users are still
able to be validated, there are no problems there. After validation, the owa
service tries to connect to a exchange server and can't.

The processor is being used for about 10% at the most and with memory no
problems also.

I have a DNS server in the network.
Could there be a problem with DNS?

After a few days it's impossible to connect to it, the only thing i can do
is rebooting the server.

We have no DNS or WINS running on the server and there is a seperate
exchange server which is connected to a lot exchange servers.

We've a isa-server in our DMZ which functions as a portal to the owa server.
The owa-server is setup with W2K-advanced server (iis 5.0) and owa 5.5, SP4.
All of our exchange servers are WinNT 4.0 and Exchange 5.5 SP4.

Could there be a problem with connectivity between W2K and WinNT 4.0?

I have an owa server running on my network. It runs just fine for an few
days, after that it becomes really hard to connect to it.
The message my clients receive is: Failed to connect to the microsoft
exchange server <servername>.

I have tried everything to prevent this from happening, but failed at every
attempt.

If anyone has suggestions or ideas, they're welcome.
