Actually you could patch a running Linux kernel, well kind of.. If you follow the virtual Linux server stuff. It gets confusing, but you can run many 'virtual' servers on top of a real server. Each virtual server, is considered it's own node.. http://www.linuxvirtualserver.org/
Patching a Linux kernel and not rebooting, is like saying that you can apply Win2k SP2 and not reboot.
