Try setting the dns address of the adapter to point at itself or whatever
local dns servers you use for your internal network's dns, then enable dns
forwarding on the exchange server: In the dnsmgmt.msc, go to the properties
of the exchange server. Under the forwarders tab, enable forwarding and
then add the two worldnet dns servers in the list.

Make sure your smtp connector is set to use dns to route messages.

Search technet for "open relay exchange 2000", follow the directions and
make sure you aren't an open relay when you get it working. My guess is
that your server will be an open relay after reading some of the previous
posts.

I THINK so. I've set the SMTP virtual server DNS addresses to the two
Worldnet DNS servers and to my internal caching only server - and I've tried
various combinations.

Check the DNS settings on your SMTP virtual server. Do you have a valid
external DNS server set?

It's unable to send. The Outlook client places the message in its Outbox,
and it dissappears quickly. It then shows at the Exchange server, in the
virtual smtp server queue. After a certain time period (relatively close to
the timeout and retries specified), I get an unable to deliver message
notification.

Well, normally there's nothing you have to do to an E2K server to allow
users to /send/ internet e-mail, it does that out of the box. What error
messages are users receiving?
