Try setting the dns address of the adapter to point at itself or whatever local dns servers you use for your internal network's dns, then enable dns forwarding on the exchange server: In the dnsmgmt.msc, go to the properties of the exchange server. Under the forwarders tab, enable forwarding and then add the two worldnet dns servers in the list.
Make sure your smtp connector is set to use dns to route messages. Search technet for "open relay exchange 2000", follow the directions and make sure you aren't an open relay when you get it working.
