On the screen I can only enter a password, The username, which shows "S&C\srcacct", and Domain, which is blank, are grayed out and cannot be changed. Only the password field allows data entry. I found a article, Q297921, which describes my problem but I could not get the resolution and workaround to work with either sp2 or sp3.

The root W2K domain name is "SANDC". This was done to get rid of the legacy "S&C" name. I have trusts setup between S&C and SANDC and they function properly. I get the above error when I run the forest prep on the new SANDC domain and try to join the existing exchange 5.5 in the S&C domain. It finds the 5.5 server, runs the prerequisite test and hangs on the service account screen. This screen shows the proper 5.5 service account name and when I enter the password, I get that error.
