Well, I just tried sending a message from an Exchange 5.5 sp4 server to "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" and got back an immediate NDR with "551 User not local. Relaying not allowed". Kind of whacky, but certainly the lack of an MX record didn't cause any problems.
