Depends on where the particular object lives in terms of AD "context". For example,
changing the display name of an admin group would take place in the configuration
"context". This is because that is where that particular object lives. Certain
"context's" are shared throughout an AD forest. These would be the configuration and
the schema. The complete "domain naming" partition lives only on the DC's that host
that particular AD domain (a regular DC only contains "domain naming" information for
the domain it is hosting). A GC is an AD domain controller that not only contains a
copy of the schema, configuration, and a copy of the domain naming context for which
it hosts, but also certain attributes and values from objects in other domain naming
context's throughout the AD forest (this allows for a complete GAL in a multi-forest
AD infrastructure).

Subject: ADSIEdit utility question

Just a dump question or I gotta brain fart. When you used ADSIEDIT to change an
attribute on a user properties(ie. legacyExchnageDN), where are you exactly changing
it? Is it the AD database, schema or GC? Please educate me. Thanks!!!!
