Before I start, let me state that I am not complaining. I love where I work, and I am
damn glad to have a job in these times

One of the things to consider in today tech field though is the fact that more and
more employers are refusing to hire people for specific tasks in an IT environment.
They want to save money by consolodating tasks. For instance, My job entails
managing a my Main AD box, an Exchange 2K box, Great Plains /SQL box, Goldmine, 4
other servers that do various funtions 100 workstations and that is the first half.
The other hat I wear requires me to manage 4 techs for a proprietary hardware/software
solution that we have developed. and this includes managing the supports lines,
scheduling tech calls, and doing support calls myself. I manage roughly another 8
servers and am responible for for an average of 50 machines a month to flow onto my
benches and flow out to customer sites. In essence, my job can be described by simply
saying, "The spice must flow".

That said, it is very difficult (For me anyways) to fully conentrate on a particular
package. I mean, you have to know it as well as you possibly can, and I have 5+ years
with exchange(Mostly 5.5) and I know it fairly well, but not as well as I would like.
I would love to be able to be tested on a particular package and know it inside and
out, but given the scope of responsibility, it is not always possible.

One day maybe, but not today.

"Microsoft Exchange engineers are a dime a dozen"

Good ones are difficult to find and even more difficult to pry away from
their current employer. After interviewing Exchange "admins" over the last
few years I've found that most people that put Exchange experience on their
resume have added or deleted a mailbox, or maybe built a server or two. Out
of five I interviewed one time, only 1 could give me the steps performed by
Exchange to route an e-mail message to the internet. I wasn't even asking
for real detail and only 1 could answer it.

Getting someone that can design a large scale implementation of Exchange is
even harder to do.

Well, this probably won't be quite as technical as you want... but it is
what I have experienced. Lotus notes - No decent support in the channel
(premium support) - core product has not been substancially updated in
years, but has an update every month... requires a heafty subscrition fee.
Microsoft Exchange - Ex engineers are a dime a dozen, MS has Excellent
support. Documeantation O' Plenty. Client requires only network logon, not a
file to access thier data (ever have a Notes user loose that file and you
realize there is no backup - a NIGHTMARE!) Exchange does not have the file
management that Notes does, but if that is not being utilized it is
definately worth going to Exchange. Especially that Domino server is the
most ass backwards program that I have ever run into...but that's just my 2
cents :)
