Exchange 2000 Problem: All of a sudden we were rejecting connections for random servers. It seemed like they were servers that we had (internal) problems looking up DNS for. However, the box was NOT checked to do a reverse DNS lookup for incoming mail.
Confirmed that the internet facing server was doing DNS lookups using NetMon. Answer: Due to a problem on Monday 11/17, we entered a list of servers into the Accept All But Those Listed Below section on the Access-> Connections properties page of the Default SMTP Virtual Server. Most of the list was done by DNS name rather than by IP. This meant that all connections were looked up in DNS to confirm that they were NOT on the deny list. However, since it's Microsoft, if it couldn't resolve the DNS, it would refuse the connection. Removed the DNS names from the list, stopped and started the Default SMTP Virtual Server, and voila, it works. File this one away.
