When your system is configured as an open relay, then spammers are able to steal your resources and use them to steal other people's resources. They're not forcing anyone to use their lists - the lists are available as a service only. The people who use those lists have chosen not to receive mail from open relays. They're merely protecting their own property from misguided and/or malicious property owners/caretakers such as those who run open relays. You are free to ignore them, if you wish. But you must be prepared to deal with the consequences if you do.
