My boss used to work for Jackson County in MO and at their prison, they
recently installed a system that makes all of the inmates wear barcodes.
Every time they leave an area, they are checked out and if they don't
make it to the next area within the alloted time, security is notified.
It is all RFID.

The technology behind it is very basic, the antenna energizes the tag
which broadcasts out it's data back to the antenna. The data is
formatted similarly to a PDF 417 bar code if your familiar with 2-D
symbologies. The tags will carry up to 1 or 2 K of data and are
read-write. The Maine Turnpike uses similar technology to manage toll
accounts. You can buy toll access at a discounted rate ($50 worth of
travel for $40) and the RFID device decrements whenever you enter the
highway. An LCD warns you when you're low on cash. Commercial accounts
carry no cash, the transactions build up on the host and you get a
monthly bill for travel. Like my snow blower, when it's working, it's
the best thing since sliced bread.

very cool. We were toying with membership ID's to simplify checkin at
events. Eventually membership discounts could be implemented between
members.

I've heard of pilot programs started in some cities where the Mobil
Speedpasses can be used to buy food at McDonalds.

Nothing yet, the AIAG has a program where they embed them in tires so
when a car rolls off the line it passes in front of the reader which
captures the VIN and the serial numbers of the tires. Then, when
there's a recall, they can easily figure out where the bad tires went.
We're considering doing the same thing in our transmissions and other
key components we produce. No concrete plan yet, just a lot of ideas.
