I feel
the same way about Exchange.
There
is no reason why Oracle couldn't produce a quality competing product to Exchange
Server. Admins would likely need to be Java enabled. But the tools
are all there.
Exchange as we know it as an application in a sense is diappearing.
Think about all the functionality Exchnage5.5 handled within itself.
Compare that to Exchange2000.
Directory Services - No longer done by Exchange - gone to Windows Active
Directory
SMTP -
No longer done by the IMS - gone to IIS SMTP in Windows
Other
Protocols - WindowsIIS
The
Information Stores will look more and more like SQL Databases in the
future.
At
that point what is Exchange? Heck, why couldn't "Exchange" run an Oracle
database? I run Oracle on NT for dev work. Wouldn't be too hard to
use an SMTP handler like Windows IIS as the message transfer
gateway.
Just

Hmmm,
I have one Exchange server that has over 560 mailboxes, plus resource mailboxes,
plus dl's, plus custom recipients and in the three plus years that this server
has been running it has been down once.......Exchange administration is only one
of my duties......& the Oracle DBA's that are in my organization don't want
ANY kind of virus scanning near their Oracle databases.
