Yah but you are unable to send from outside the domain as well. Not a very nice tradeoff. All my outside users now either have to use OWA or I have to open up the anonymous on the smtp so they can continue to function.

Exchange 2000 is supposed to be relay-secure out of the box.  So unless you changed something in the SMTP virtual server properties, then you shouldn't be relaying.
