I got a feeling I'm gonna regret this, but... one more WG user chiming in
over here (at the risk of being slaughtered by some of the most
knowledgeable on the list). The SMTP proxy does have some unfriendly
hardwired functionality (like the way it hammers some of the ESMTP stuff)
and this is typical of WG - things like the built in proxies, spam screen,
etc would be great if you could get into it and fine tune the services. But
you can't - and the default "all-or-nothing" way these services act has made
them unusable for many sites. I think (hope) they will improve on this area
- they have done some work but there is a growing wishlist.

But <ducking the flying tomatoes here> for a small site like ours with 1
Firebox handful of SOHO's and VPN's (probably a much less complicated
configuration and relatively fewer demands than most others on this list) it
does a nice job overall. And so even with it's faults, the WG SMTP proxy
talking to a 3rd party relay (DMZ) and that box in turn relaying into the
Exchange server does not cause us too much grief - and it's a better option
than that consultant's (strange) suggestion.

I assumes that Craig is not planning on rushing out to get a firebox after
reading this thread. Truth is I spent so much time bashing others in the
last few weeks (CA, etc) that I just felt like dropping a good word for
someone (WG) today. True - WG products need some work. Your consultant
needs some electric shock therapy. I need a beer.
