If you have corruption in the store.. EXMERGE might fail on several mailboxes depending on where the corruption is.
I have experienced this myself and the store would not move 3 mailboxes(out of 250) due to internal corruption. I had to save those out individually(.PST) and then some folders wouldn't download due to same corruption.

The good news was that I tried to run ESEUTIL on it afterwards and it came back with a 50meg file once completed.. Basically a blank store.

So the destroy and re-create store option maybe your best solution.

PSS suggested I do a eseutil/p, but they decided to have my exmerge it out, create a new blank db and exmerge it back in

as soon as the boss comes in and authorizes the 250 I am going to call pss and see what could have caused this.  The server is only three months old.  Then see what they suggest.  I will post what they recommend.  I was looking on tech tips and there are a lot of us in this boat.

if you disable circular logging, you can recover from point of failure.. that is why you should turn it off.

MS seems to think you can flip the switch on or off at leisure.  I have always had it disabled so I couldnt tell you what would happen if I re-enabled it.

we do backup from a different server - two of them backing up all of my servers individually onto Dell DLT drives.

We have been toying with disabling circular first so I guess with 25 gigs I should be able to - but if this does not work I don't want to not have a way back and then have this server get overwhelmed with uncommitted log files.

If I disable circular logging can it be re-enabled without much issue?

Then I guess the next thing I would try would be to disable circular logging.  I have 2 servers running Backup Exec 8, one with a DDS3 and one with a DDS4, neither have circular logging enabled.  The remote agent backup has me worried too.  Are you backing up the exchange database from another server?  That is something I havent tested before.  I always do local backups when it comes to exchange.  Never worked for a company with a large enough store to require anything else.

Try backing up just the exchange stuff using 1 tape if possible instead of a full backup with multiple tapes.

Subject: Backup Exec Problem

Hey Folks - This list has been so helpful I am dipping into the well once again.

We are not getting a solid backup of our exchange server.  We have contacted Veritas and done every step they suggested and we have had zero luck.

Environment:
Exchange 5.5 sp4 running on Windows 2000K SP2  Circular logging enabled until I can get a solid backup.
Backup Exec 8.5 running on NT 4. SP 6a
Remote agents and Exchange agents installed (and reinstalled ad naseum)

It seems to be failing on the logs.  I have a 25 gigs of space on the log drive so I can disable circular but I am concerned of the ramifications of that as well without a solid backup.  I have full access to the server as I CAN do a Brick Level Backup but for obvious reasons would prefer not to.

TIA for any direction!
