I like to see "supported" as a grey area. They will answer your call, and they will help you. [1] It is up to them at which time they say " we cannot support your setup, you need to install this on supported hardware before we can go further" I have yet to hear Microsoft say that on a call that I have made to PSS. It is a gamble. In some environments you cannot do that, in others you can. It is up to company to decide to roll those dice based on their needs and perceived benefits from the "unsupported" configuration.
"unsupported" means not tested, or that will not work. It is up the support staff to figure that out where that line should be drawn.
