Concur - whether global or universal, in order to use the group to assign permissions, it must be a security group. Interesting that it doesn't even give you the option to choose the group - we have had cases before where public folder permissions have been applied using DL's, and it automatically switches the scope of the group from distribution to security. Does not affect the ability of the group to still receive email.
