We're using Tumbleweed's Secure Messenger - https based w/internet access via reverse proxy. Internal users authenticated via AD (or various flavors of LDAP), external users have local passwords. Shares servers/databases with their Email Firewall product which we use. UI is email like - send includes server generated email w/link to message, read (open) confirmation.
I can send you off-list sample if you'd like.
