uh....that can get dangerous.

is the server visible in aduc? or ad sites&services? if so - you should use
those utilities to delete the server first.

if not, use a tool like adfind (not dsquery for this application) and search
both defaultNC and configNC for any object having that cn=<server-name>.

OK, the plot thickens

In ADSIEdit, under Configuration, CN=Configuration, CN=Services, CN=Netservices
I see a server which I don’t recognise with an ip address which is not in use (
and hasn’t been here for the last 3 years)
I can’t find it anywhere else with a quick search, but it raises my fears even
more
I know the name and IP of the server in question – is there a recommended tool
for searching and removing this from AD?

It’s possible. The two things I pointed out are the only obvious things (to
me). I would check and ensure those two objects in ADSIedit have the proper
permissions.

Please run ExBPA and the server installation checker. They may help.

OK Here we go – same error messages on screen and event log

[12/02/2010 17:52:00.0416] [0] Setup version: 14.1.218.15.
[12/02/2010 17:57:59.0693] [2] ScAclDeletedObjectsCT
(f:\14.01.0218\sources\dev\admin\src\libs\logic\delegaterole.cxx:2198)
Error code 0X80072030 (8240): There is no such object on the server.

Checked http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931751/en-us - nothing in there

Everything I see in the web points towards a failed install – I’m wondering if
I’ve inherited something with a hidden past?

First of all, I recommend you install SP1, not RTM.

Secondly, look in your AD (using ADSIEdit or LDP) and see if you have a
LostAndFound container in your Configuration naming context and whether it
contains anything.

Let us know.
