is the server visible in aduc? or ad sites&services? if so - you should use those utilities to delete the server first. if not, use a tool like adfind (not dsquery for this application) and search both defaultNC and configNC for any object having that cn=<server-name>. The two things I pointed out are the only obvious things (to me). I would check and ensure those two objects in ADSIedit have the proper permissions.
