All Exchange media is the same.
You can install fresh from Exchange service pack download on the public web
site. You do not have to use whatever is on the volume site.

If you get a hub transport server in place then you can start to queue email.
It is unusual to have mailbox and hub transport together and CAS separate. I
would have had CAS and Hub transport together and mailbox on its own. However
this is not the time to change things around.

CAS first if you can, but I the grand scheme of things it won't make much
difference since you will be doing the other server(s) immediately.

MVLS only has with SP1 for some reason. I can get with SP2 on technet so I'll
have to use that.

Should I be installing a particular server first, mailbox or cas&hub transport?

Reinstall with the /RecoverServer switch from the SP2 media. Then patch -

a pinch it won't hurt to leave it at SP2 native.

Good luck James.

Just rejoined. I know it's late there, thanks again for your help. Hopefully
MBS will be around tomorrow and can provide a suggestion on the patching level.

I am not 100%, the purpose of the reset is to maintain all of the SID and
security ACL's for that computer account. Doing the recoverswitch basically
just reinstalls Exchange without doing a full install..security checking,
domain prep, etc... its assuming that's all done already.

Did you delete and rejoin or did you just rejoin? I believe if you just
rejoined and no errorsthen everything should be ok, if you deleted it and
rejoined you will have some problems installing Exchange. Most likely errors
saying Exchange already exists in the org or unable to start services at the
end of the install.

Thanks Greg. I forgot about the account reset and the server has been joined
to the domain. What should I do?

James, good luck.

I successfully used this document to perform a DR. We combined two servers
into one, standardizing on the Mailbox Role Server being the one we made sure
the name matched. Once it was up they split the roles again.

Don't forget to reset the computer account that your MB Role was installed on.

I seem to remember being told by PSS once that being on a higher SP is better
than being on a lower one when restoring Databases.

There are many more saavy than I in this realm, but considering the hour I
thought I would get you something that I had used to read through.

Subject: Exchange server went for a swim, now need to restore

As those on the sysadmin list know, our data centre was flooded.

I'm now preparing to restore exchange and have a few challenges so I'm hoping
the list can help.

We had two exchange servers.

Exchange01 - Windows Server 2008 SP2, Exchange 2007 with SP2, Client Access
Exchange02 - Windows Server 2008 SP2, Exchange 2007 with SP2, Mailbox and Hub
Transport(I think).

My understanding is that I need to build the servers with the exact names then
install Exchange using the recoverserver switch, then restore the databases
etc. The problems I have:-

1. I'm not sure which server had the Hub Transport on (I THINK it was the
mailbox server).
2. I'm unsure what patch level exchange was at. It had SP2 and a CU but I
don't know what CU level it was at.

What I have:-

1. System State and mailbox backups.
2. Functioning AD.

Thanks for any assistance.

James.
