Does it matter if the mailboxes are hidden from the GAL and the user account is disabled? (Our current setup.)

When doing a coexistence migration, can a user with a 2003 mailbox mount an additional a 2010 mailbox? Vice Versa? Backstory: Most of our Outlook users have another mailbox mounted in Outlook. It might be a mailbox that many people access, it might be a former employees mailbox they need access to. Can't find an answer on the web or in my books.
