Seems the package isn't the problem, rather the notification method because you have no internet/email connectivity to notify you that there's a problem?
Do you host external facing services in your server room? If so why not look at one of the numerous external services that monitor that your websites/smtp/dns/whatever are responding and email you if they aren't?
