I have been running the 4.99 release candidates until today when 4.99 was
released.
I compiled and installed it.

Whereas exim -bV says it's 4.99, the main log prints 4.98.2 and I am
wondering whether I am going bonkers.

wash@eu:~$ which exim
/usr/sbin/exim
wash@eu:~$ /usr/sbin/exim -bV

In an Internet failure case, the #1 suspect is a constant: DNS.
"Oh, the cruft.", egrep -v '^$|^.*#' ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ :-)
