Chris Don't get the wrong tone on my answer. it has a positive tone, but why don't you phone the embassy in Berlin and ask them? I'm sure that they will be very helpful and will give you the answer 'from the horses mouth' as we say or direct from the people responsible. :-)
Far better than asking a load of non-Russian-embassy-in -Berlin people on this list don't you think? I have a question for you though. Once we get the invitation and head out to get our temp visas, can my partner, who is US citizen go to Germany and get it in the German embassy? He has a Aufenthaltserlaubnis (unlimited work and living permit) for Germany and lived there for the past 12 years prior of coming to Russia. Any ideas, if they'll issue that temp visa to US citizens in the Berlin embassy?
