Three years ago, I went to Izmailovsky, walked into the center of the row where they sell matrioshkas and asked "Who can make 10 personalized matrioshkas?" A large group of artists gathered around me, and I told them that I needed a set for a European singer (each one was the cover of his 10 albums, the last one being "From Russia with Love" that we filmed together throughout Russia). I told them that I needed it done in three days, everyone said 'no way.' I simply said if you don't want my money, then I'll find someone who does...One of the 'no-way guys' decided to take on the challenge. Did an excellent job and a normal price. You just have to haggle, and the matrioshkas come in all kinds of finishes. The ones I had made were special order, hand-painted. But there are cheaper versions available.
The singer was thrilled with the gift. We thought it would be a good going away gift for a visiting professor and his family. Other ideas are welcome too. Marian
