Three years ago, I went to Izmailovsky, walked into the center of the row where
they sell matrioshkas and asked "Who can make 10 personalized matrioshkas?" A
large group of artists gathered around me, and I told them that I needed a set
for a European singer (each one was the cover of his 10 albums, the last one
being "From Russia with Love" that we filmed together throughout Russia). I
told them that I needed it done in three days, everyone said 'no way.' I simply
said if you don't want my money, then I'll find someone who does...One of the
'no-way guys' decided to take on the challenge. Did an excellent job and a
normal price. You just have to haggle, and the matrioshkas come in all kinds of
finishes. The ones I had made were special order, hand-painted. But there are
cheaper versions available.

The singer was thrilled with the gift.

Does anyone know an artist who customizes matrioshka dolls with family
portraits on them? We thought it would be a good going away gift for a
visiting professor and his family. Other ideas are welcome too.
