Yes, it's cheaper, and I've used regular mail when shipping the Dostoyevsky Complete and other books I bought in a SPb used bookshop a couple of summers ago. What I would see about is whether the P.O. (the particular P.O. you'll be shipping from) will let you pack them in boxes. In my case, they wouldn't, and insisted that the books travel wrapped in brown paper. Obviously, they had to be packed in several small parcels rather than one large one. The cost added up to a significant sum, and corners (but fortunately, only corners) were dented and beat up by the time the books made it to Cambridge, Mass. It might, in the end, be less expensive and safer to take the exra-heavy luggage.
