Hello Collective Intelligence of the Expat List!

If it's no trouble I'd like to pick your collective minds for a bit of advice.

I've been studying and teaching here for a few years and am presently in Russia on a student visa. The thing is that I'm pretty much fed up with my university and don't want to pay for another semester of abuse. However I'd like to stay in Russia and continue to teach and work. My student visa is good, however, until October of next year. Given that there is talk of a change to the visa rules come January (and fraught with much uncertainty) should I bother to try and get a work visa while I'm in the US this January on family business matters anyway? Will a new work visa be denied since I already have a student visa? Will the fact that I won't be paying another dime to my university affect anything? I'd like to err on the side of caution... but I'd also like to err on the side of convenience and arguable laziness.

Oh great collective intelligence I beseech thee for guidance!

And thanks for any guidance you all can give!

Sincerely,

Dustin H.
