Jessica, To add my 5 cents to the discussion, I would advise you not to check-in your luggage with United to Moldova. It may be better to recover your luggage in Moscow and check it in with S7 (even if it means going through the Russian customs).
I had a very unpleasant experience with United recently. I checked-in my luggage with United in Honolulu and they were supposed to transfer it to a connecting Aeroflot flight in LA - Moscow (plenty of time between the flights). My luggage was lost (found it only 2 months later myself with no help from United). While I was looking for my luggage, the Aeroflot people in LA and Moscow commented several times on how ineffective the United luggage transfer system is and how often the bags get lost during the transfer.
