Sarah, Expats and Interpats, I searched the MT Classified->Community listings for the 2 animal shelters for dogs and cats they regularly list.
1. Private animal shelter EKO needs financial and other help badly. Among beautiful dogs and cats of the shelter, you can find loyal friends. See www.priuteko.ru, or call Lyudmila: (916) 015-2873, (916) 015-2873. 2. Dogs at MUNICIPAL DOGS' SHELTER in Kozhukhovo (southeast), caught from Moscow streets, need your warmth, love and care. You may find loyal dog and cat friends at www.vao-priut.ru. Visiting hours: noon to 4 p.m., Tuesday to Saturday. Contact Lyudmila: (916) 015-2873, (916) 015-2873 . People at these two locations probably know other resources for discarded/abandoned pets. I know of an informal 24hour cat rescue organization in Moscow and will track-down the person's name and list that info too. I am looking-for other cat/dog rescue resources and will list them shortly. I am also looking for info to help any homeless person find a place to escape the winter. Last winter a homeless man died just outside our metro and was discovered the next morning. He was found along the major walkway from our metro stop to a major business complex. I understand that at least one person per day during the subfreezing winter nights dies after the metro is closed. I would love to give these men and women information about where to go to stay warm and possibly get other help. I would even take them to a shelter myself. Although I love domestic pets and hate to see them suffer during the Winter we should be just as concerned about anyone who "falls on hard times" and need help to survive the average Moscow "challenging" winter.
