Agree to that. Vadim is great! And Kiev consulate is usually reasonable, as long as you just make your home-work and prepare all the documents for the application and keep a nice tone, they usually try to help. You can find their number on the internet and call them. In worst case, if denied for some reason in Kiev, he can try going down to Odessa which has a very friendly Russian consulate.
