Just an idea: wouldn't you have any firewall rules preventing 
input packets to reach the desktop (but not the laptop) ???

This could be the case e.g. if you really wanted to prevent
input packets from Internet (on ppp interface) but misconfigured
(or forgot) the interface in your fw rules ...

Just an idea ...
