Just wanted to say thanks for all the input on this topic. I took all
replies and I forget what all I did, but I got it back working. It appears
that pam was overriding my passwd file. I didn't think I installed pam
(guess maybe it just installs itself), anyway, after editing a lot of files
in pam.d dir (not to mention two failed re-installations)my system is up and
running with no loss of data.
