[expert] ppp dying

Hi everyone
I have been running Mandrake since 6.0 I have just installed a fresh 7.1
Its nice :-)
However I configure ppp networking with Linuxconfig and select the user
(de)activate option and it all works fine
BUT '
after a reboot I can only access ppp as root
I can go and reset it all again and its OK
What gives
Any bright suggestions
