Progress. You can get pretty much whatever rpms you want/need
from the ftp site for rpmfind rather than the website.

I managed to get kde-2.0 installed properly on my 7.1 system
with the following rpms:

mandrake_desk-7.2-18mdk
rpm-3.0.5-27mdk
menu-2.1.5-42mdk
libstdc++-2.95.2-7mdk

At least, the rpms all installed without any core dumps
from /usr/bin/update-menus. I don't know how kde actually
runs yet because I had to do all this remotely via ssh.
I'll have to wait until I get home after work to restart X
to see if the install is good and working properly.
