I had the same problem when I tried an upgrade for kde-1.99.  I did not 
understand what was going on at first but then figured this had to do with 
security problems so decided to download pam-0.72-12 (0.72-9 comes with 
LM-7.2B3)  after upgrading pam kdm allowed logins again.
