Sendmail 8.10 has a set of SMTP-AUTH features (smtp authentication
features). I don't use sendmail myself, so I wouldn't be able to provide
much help for you on that (personally I find sendmail ridiculously
difficult to use, and it's notoriously insecure, too).

Alternatively, you can use a pop-before-smtp solution (which, I believe,
does work with Sendmail) - you can find information about it here:

This little utility forces users who want to *send* mail to authenticate
using POP3 first.
