I don't see things that way at all. In the first place, there's the interesting question of whether QT ever would have become really open source if there hadn't been a challenge. In the second place, there still isn't an open-source version for Win32. In the third place, Gnome is doing quite well, thank you. It's even spawning independant companies. Personally, I consider Gnome as another reason why those who believe in Open Source (or Free Software) owe a debt of gratitude to Red Hat. KDE is still the more polished, but I just checked my screen, and I'm running Gnome right now (with KMail to handle the mail). For the last week or so, I've been using Konqueor about as much as I use Mozilla, and dipping into Netscape occasionally. But I may switch back to KDE after the next update. They're pretty close in terms of quality. But having both protects against one of them somehow being taken private.
