Yes, I've seen exactly this. Can't say I came up with a solution but
the computer had a Samsung hard drive on ide1. While we did a lot of
device shuffling, as long as that drive was attached, Linux would not
get past the point you describe. Once it was out of the loop
everything worked just fine.
