Hi,

The 'uname' command with the '-r' option prints the operating system's
release as read directly from the running kernel.

if you do a 'ls -l boot' look at the symlink of vmlinuz.  it should
point to a vmlinuz-x.x.x-xmdk.  the first 3 x's should give you the
kernal version (the last x is the mandrake build)

if you just installed 8.1 it should be 2.4.8
