Well, I would try to put the 8.1 and 8.2 Beta on the Maxtor

On the WDs, minimize the use of linux--they are at their best with the 
windows drivers they offer to compensate for their lack of hardware and 
they officially do not support the use of linux on their drives.

With /boot on other than the primary drive, use GRUB instead of LILO.

DO NOT, not even in an air raid, make a RAID of any description of /. 
You will be unable to update with the install CDs.
