hotplug is designed to work with USB storage...  Supermount is still 
being refined from the disaster of the transition to kernel 2.4, and 
removable (not unpluggable) media was the first to be implemented.  So 
USB storage devices like memory are down the road a bit, while the ZIP 
and a few other devices work well now.
