Looking at the lyx Web site it looks as though the QT and gtk frontends started development ... then died. They are not complete and probably never will be :/ I suppose the authors decided to concentrate on one toolkit which, unfortunately, happened to be the ugliest because it was there first and most development had already been done on it. There are other excellent packages with the same problem, such as xephem (Motif) and scid (Tcl/Tk) ...
