Title: I FIXED THE SOUND PROBLEM - well sort of ;-)

Hi All,

I finally found a work around to fix the sound problem I have been having (i.e. no bass sound).  I saw a post on the mailing lists yesterday about using the sound configuration tool within Mandrake9.0's Control Center.  I ran this and then started XMMS.  Hang on, XMMS won't start.  The console says it a mixer problem.  So I run alsamixer,  alsamixer won't run so I run noatun to see if that works.  It does and the sound coming out of my speakers is crystal clear.

So basically ALSA was the problem.  By killing it, I can get clear bassy sound.  Along with ALSA being killed, OSS and Threaded OSS support has also gone out the window.  So I must be using the raw ARTS server as my sound server now.  But the problems I have been having with older Mandrakes is back.  Laggy sound with ocassional slowdown in some applications.  It is not a biggy for me, but some games (frozen-bubble, foul-eggs, etc...) that my family like to play is a real hassle.

Thanks for all your help guys.  It has been a frustrating time, but I'm glad I can now see the back of it.  Hopefully when ALSA0.9_FINAL or Mandrake 9.1 (which ever comes first) is released I can try that and see if I can get that to work for me.  Cheers and thanks heaps.

Craig
