Ah, sorry, maybe I wasn't being explicit: I managed to change lilo.conf 
and install the new boot (yes, I'm sure, I created new entries instead 
of editing the old ones). The result of trying to boot with the 
respective entries (noAPIC nopentium) resulted in the same situation 
[... - see below].
