YESSSSSSS! Yes! Yes, that seems to have been it! I have a sound card
on-board (something called AC'97 if anybody cares) and disabling it made
even the regular boot work!

Luckily I have a SoundBlaster Live! as the "real" sound card, so
disabling the on-board sound doesn't affect me, but I think this could
be a real problem for someone relying on the on-board card for sound
(imagine changing BIOS settings when switching OS'es on multiple OS
computers).

Anyway, thanks a lot everybody - I was just about to give up on
Mandrake, and would've if it weren't for you to help. I was in a real
hurry to make Linux work because I have some web development to do and
didn't have a platform to work on... (yes, I know there's Apache for
Windows as well, but I prefer doing this in Linux).

Thanks again!

Bogdan
