at its most basic:
vi <filename> (or vim; in mdk, vi is just a link to vim)
i (for insert mode)
<make all changes; arrow keys, pgup/pgdn all work>
Esc (exit insert mode, return to command mode)
:wq (: = enter command line, "w" = write file to current
filename, "q" = quit vi(m))
4 commands from beginning to end. the "horror" of vi comes with
learning its true power; the most basic functions are no more
complicated than any other editor, just a bit different. one
additional upside... vi is *guaranteed* (as much as anything is
guaranteed) to be available on "most" any *nix system out there -
only one basic learning curve.
