Just out of curiosity, make sound-slot-0 point to snd-card-es1938, run
depmod -a, then modprobe sound-slot-0.  Look in the output of dmesg to
see if the module is complaining about things.

as i had a similar problem, here the solution which worked for my soundcard (/etc/modules.conf):
...
alias sound-slot-0 snd-emu10k1
above snd-emu10k1 snd-pcm-oss
...

reboot the computer and configure the mixers.
